Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.
She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love.
She's wrong.

Review

Mara Dyer wakes up in a hospital, not knowing how she got there or what happened.  It turns out that she and her friends apparently went to the local condemned asylum and she was the only one who made it out alive.  Rachel, Claire and Jude are all dead.  Mara is diagnosed with PTSD and to get away from the memories her family moves from Massachusetts to Miami, Florida.  Everyone is walking on eggshells around Mara because of her hallucinations and nightmares, her Mother even wants to institutionalize her in a hospital.  At her new school Mara is mostly ignore except for Noah Shaw, the most beautiful boy in school, who takes an immediate interest in her when he sees her beating up the vending machine.  Also, a boy named Jamie is in some of her classes and she strikes up an unusual acquaintance.  Mara's older brother Daniel tries his hardest to get Mara to go out with Noah, because he thinks he'll be good for him.  Mara isn't the same since the accident - when she imagines the death of something IT ACTUALLY HAPPENS.  A large part of the book revolved around a murder trial that Mara's Dad was a lawyer for the accused.  It was a subplot that really only existed to further Mara's own personal angst.  Both of her parents and her brothers (Joseph, the youngest was especially fun) were very realistic people.  There is some really hot romance build-up and I honestly like Noah, who ends up having a secret of his own.  The ending of this book made me extremely frustrated because it had a cliffhanger!!!  Now I really want the second one!  I would recommend this to fans of mysteries, paranormals and romances.  This would have a higher rating, but the romance and petty school drama outweighed the paranormal mystery element too much in the novel (not in a bad way, but it disappointed me).

VERDICT:  4/5  Stars
